Magic Banned & Restricted Updates September 2013

With the rotation of Innistrad for Theros, all sanctioned formats as well as the group that oversees the Commander format announced their updates to banned and restricted lists.

The following changes are:

Standard, Modern, Legacy, Vintage

No changes

Commander

No card changes. However, their “optional rules” including sideboarding, are now downgraded officially to house rule options.

Functional Errata and Relevant Rules Changes

They have corrected a typo with Blood Speaker such that you don’t have to shuffle your library every turn anymore, since that wasn’t its intended effect. All the more proof that punctuation matters.

More interestingly, they have cleaned up the weird corner case issues where a card can be granting an ability to another card that had undefined parameters. The example they use is what happens if Myr Welder gains the abilities of both Demonspine Whip and Transmogrifying Licid, and then uses its Licid ability. You then have an Aura Equipment. Both cards grant abilities based on whether the creature is equipped or enchanted. So, there was confusion. In this case, if it stayed a Licid Aura, the Demonspine equip ability did nothing since it looked for an equipped creature. This was their original fix, but it caused some issues with other type-changing cards at the layer level. So, now, enchanted, equipped, and fortified all fall under the umbrella of “attached”, and that Licid-dominated Myra Aura Equipment will get both bonuses whether it’s equipped or attached. Will this matter in 99.9999% of games? Not one bit. Still interesting though. Licids, man, they always manage to mess things up while still being awesome.
